Trip Overview
early road.
The Rainbow Mountain Peru Full Day Tour takes you to Vinicunca, one of the highest and most striking mountain viewpoints in the Cusco region. The hike is not very long, but the altitude makes it serious. You start from the city while it is still dark, cross rural valleys, pass small Andean villages, and walk through open highland terrain until the colored slopes of Rainbow Mountain rise in front of you.
This route reaches around 5,100 m / 16,732 ft, so the body feels every step. The final section can be slow and demanding, but the reward is clear: layered mineral colors, views of Ausangate Mountain, herds of alpacas, local families in traditional clothing, and the deep red tones of the Red Valley viewpoint.
With Machu Picchu Gol Travel, the day is organized with hotel pickup, tourist transport, breakfast, buffet lunch, entrance tickets, trekking poles, a professional guide, and safety support.
It is a strong choice for travelers who want a full Andean day without spending several days on a trek.
Tour at a Glance
Day by Day Schedule
Day highlight: Reaching Rainbow Mountain and seeing the mineral-colored slopes with Ausangate rising nearby.
The day starts very early with pickup from your hotel in Cusco. The road heads south through the valley, passing rural towns, farming areas, and mountain roads while the light begins to move across the land.
After around 1 hour and 30 minutes of driving, the group stops for breakfast. This meal is important because the hike takes place at high altitude, where the body needs energy and hydration.
After breakfast, the drive continues through Cusipata and toward Llacto, the starting point of the hike at around 4,630 m / 15,190 ft. Before walking, your guide gives clear instructions about pace, altitude, weather, and trail safety.
The trail begins with a steady walk through open highland terrain. Some sections are mostly flat, while others rise gradually. Along the way, you may see alpacas, llamas, horses, local families, and wide views toward Ausangate Mountain. The ground is mostly dirt, with stones, dust, and uneven sections. During rainy months, mud and wet patches can appear.
The final stretch is the most demanding part. It includes a steeper climb and some steps before reaching the main viewpoint. At this altitude, even a short climb can feel heavy, so slow walking is the right choice.
At the top, Rainbow Mountain appears with its layered colors across the slope. The guide gives time for photos, rest, and explanation of the area. The weather can change quickly here, with wind, cold, sun, or clouds arriving in a short time.
After the main viewpoint, the route continues toward the Red Valley viewpoint, depending on weather, safety, and group condition. This area has deep red tones and fewer crowds than the main Rainbow Mountain viewpoint.
Later, the group descends toward the starting point. The descent usually takes around 1 hour and can be hard on the knees, so trekking poles help.
Once back at the trailhead, transport takes the group to a restaurant for buffet lunch. After lunch, the return drive to Cusco begins. Drop-off is usually at your hotel or at a nearby accessible point, depending on traffic and street access.

In some cases, tours may be changed or canceled. Any change will be coordinated by our operations team. Safety comes first, and decisions will be made to protect travelers and staff.
Lost objects
Please check your belongings whenever leaving transport, restaurants, viewpoints, or rest areas. You are responsible for your personal items during the tour.

Machu Picchu Gol Travel is a Cusco-based travel agency operating tours in the city and across Peru. Our service focuses on clear organization, safe transport, trained local guides, and careful attention to travelers before and during the route.
The Rainbow Mountain route passes through areas linked to Quiquijana, Cusipata, Llacto, Vinicunca, Red Valley, and the Ausangate mountain zone. These highland areas are part of local rural life, where families raise alpacas, llamas, and horses, and where tourism must be handled with respect.
Our commitment is to work with local staff and providers in a fair and organized way. Even though this is a one-day tour, it still requires early logistics, safe driving, meal coordination, entrance ticket handling, guide support, and altitude awareness.
For this route, small details matter. The morning is cold, the hike is high, the final climb can feel demanding, and the weather can change quickly. We provide practical guidance, trekking poles, and a guide who helps the group manage the altitude safely.
Food is also part of the service. Breakfast gives you energy before the hike, and buffet lunch after the descent helps you recover before the drive back to Cusco. Vegetarian, vegan, and other dietary needs can be arranged with advance notice.
Traveling with Machu Picchu Gol Travel means having a local team that knows the road, the trail, the altitude, and the timing needed to make the day feel organized from pickup to return.
