Trip Overview
There are days in Cusco when the Andes ask for more than a regular hike.
The Rainbow Mountain ATV Tour from Cusco is built for travelers who want to reach Vinicunca with more movement, less walking, and a stronger sense of freedom across the highland roads. Instead of doing the full traditional trek, you ride an ATV through wide Andean terrain, passing streams, rural paths, llamas, alpacas, and open mountain land before the final short walk to the viewpoint.
This route reaches over 5,000 m / 16,404 ft, so the altitude still matters. The ATV reduces the physical effort, but the thin air, cold wind, and final uphill section still ask for patience. That balance makes this tour a smart option for travelers who want a dynamic mountain day without a long hike.
With Machu Picchu Gol Travel, the tour includes organized pickup, tourist transport, guide support, safety briefing, ATV practice, helmet and gloves, breakfast, buffet lunch, oxygen, and first aid assistance.
It is a full-day ride into the Vilcanota mountain range, made for travelers who want color, altitude, speed control, and a different way to reach Rainbow Mountain.
Tour at a Glance
Day by Day Schedule
Day highlight: Riding through highland roads toward Rainbow Mountain with a short final walk to the main viewpoint.
The day starts early with pickup from your hotel or Airbnb in Cusco. The drive heads south, leaving the city behind and moving into rural Andean areas with fields, hills, and small local communities.
The first main stop is Cusipata, where breakfast is served. This stop is useful because the route continues toward much higher ground, and your body needs energy before the activity.
After breakfast, the trip continues by tourist transport toward Japura, the ATV base. Once there, the guide gives a safety briefing and explains how to use the ATV. You will also have a short practice session before starting the route. This makes the tour suitable even for travelers without previous ATV driving practice, as long as they follow instructions carefully.
The ATV route begins on rural dirt roads surrounded by high mountain scenery. The terrain can include compact dirt, loose stones, open paths, small streams, and uneven ground. The guide controls the pace and asks the group to keep distance between vehicles. Speed is not the goal here; control is what keeps the route safe.
Along the way, you may see llamas, alpacas, horses, local residents, farming areas, and broad views of the Vilcanota range. The ride is part of the main value of this tour, not just transport to the mountain.
At the closest permitted point, the ATVs are parked and the final walk begins. This section is around 1.5 to 2 km / 0.9 to 1.2 mi and may take 40 to 50 minutes. It is short, but the altitude makes it feel harder than it looks. The ground can be uneven, dusty, rocky, or muddy depending on the season.
Travelers who prefer not to walk the final section may find local services in the area, such as horse or local transport options. These services are not included and must be paid directly on site.
At the viewpoint, you will have time to rest, take photos, and see the colored layers of Vinicunca. These colors come from mineral deposits formed over millions of years. Red tones are linked to iron oxides, green tones to copper compounds, yellow tones to sulfur-based minerals, and beige or brown tones to clay and sandstone.
After the visit, the group returns by the same route to the ATV area and rides back to Japura. Then, tourist transport takes the group to Cusipata for buffet lunch.
After lunch, the return drive to Cusco begins. The service ends near Plaza Regocijo or another central point depending on the day’s operation.

Service Notes
Hotel pickup
Pickup is from hotels or Airbnbs in Cusco city within the established schedule. Some streets in Cusco are narrow, steep, or closed to vehicles. If your accommodation has difficult access, we may coordinate a nearby meeting point.
Pickup time may vary due to traffic, street access, or group logistics.
Luggage storage
This is a full-day tour, so large luggage is not needed. You can leave your main luggage at your hotel or coordinate storage with our office if required.
Do not leave valuables inside stored luggage. Passport, money, cards, medication, electronics, and cameras should stay with you.
Payment conditions
A deposit may be required to secure transport, guide, ATV equipment, meals, and operation staff. Some services must be arranged before departure and may become non-refundable once confirmed.
The remaining balance should be paid before the tour according to the instructions from our reservations team. Cash payments in Cusco may avoid online transaction fees. Card or online payments may include gateway fees.
These conditions exist because ATVs, staff, transport, meals, and safety equipment must be reserved before departure.
Return to Cusco
After the ATV route, final viewpoint, return to Japura, and buffet lunch in Cusipata, the group returns by tourist transport to Cusco.
The service usually ends at a central point near Plaza Regocijo. Travel time may vary due to traffic, road conditions, weather, or local events.
Availability
This tour does not include Machu Picchu, so it is more flexible than tours that require Machu Picchu tickets.
Even so, booking in advance is recommended to secure ATV availability, guide assignment, transport, meals, and safety equipment. In some cases, reservations may be accepted up to 24 hours before departure, depending on operation capacity.
For last-minute bookings, please contact the reservations team of Machu Picchu Gol Travel directly. We will do our best to organize the tour, but acceptance is not guaranteed.
Altitude and Acclimatization
This tour reaches over 5,000 m / 16,404 ft, so altitude is the main challenge. The ATV reduces walking effort, but it does not remove the effects of thin air.
Spending 1 or 2 days in Cusco before the tour helps your body adapt. Drink water, avoid alcohol, eat light, and rest well before departure.
Possible altitude symptoms include headache, dizziness, nausea, unusual tiredness, shortness of breath, or loss of appetite. If symptoms appear during the tour, inform your guide right away.
Difficulty and Final Walk
The tour is considered moderate. The ATV ride reduces the physical demand compared with the traditional Rainbow Mountain hike.
The final walk is short, around 40 to 50 minutes, but it takes place above 5,000 m / 16,404 ft. For this reason, it can feel harder than expected.
Walk slowly, take breaks, and do not rush the final ascent.
Terrain During the Route
The route combines several types of highland terrain:
- Rural compact dirt roads
- Loose stone sections
- Open mountain paths
- Stream crossings or wet patches depending on season
- Uneven final walking trail
- Possible mud during rainy months
ATV driving must be controlled and steady. Sudden movements, unnecessary speed, or ignoring guide instructions can increase risk.
Flora on the Route
The route passes through the high-Andean puna ecosystem. This area has cold weather, strong sun, wind, and low oxygen.
You may see ichu, the highland grass that covers wide parts of the route. In some areas, native queñua trees can appear, especially in higher Andean zones. Mosses and lichens may also be seen in wetter areas, helping protect soil and moisture.
Fauna on the Route
The Rainbow Mountain area is home to animals adapted to the high Andes. Along the route, travelers often see llamas and alpacas grazing near local communities.
In more open areas, it may be possible to see vicuñas. Rocky zones can also be home to vizcachas. Depending on the season, highland birds such as caracaras and hawks may be seen, and on rare occasions, the Andean condor may fly over higher parts of the range.
Climate
Vinicunca has cold weather throughout the year because of its altitude. Temperatures may range between 0°C and 12°C / 32°F and 54°F, with the coldest hours in the early morning.
Weather can change quickly. A sunny moment can turn into wind, cold, rain, or cloud cover. Solar radiation is strong at altitude, even when the sky is partly cloudy.
The rainy season is mainly from November to March. The drier season is usually from April to October, when visibility is often better.
Geological Value of Vinicunca
Rainbow Mountain is formed by sedimentary layers and mineral deposits shaped over millions of years.
The red tones are linked to iron oxides. Green tones are associated with copper compounds. Yellow tones are related to sulfur-based minerals. Brown and beige tones come from clays and sandstones.
This mineral layering is what gives Vinicunca its color pattern and makes it one of the most requested high-altitude landscapes in Peru.
Travel Restrictions
Strikes and demonstrations
Strikes and demonstrations are common in Peru and may interrupt some tours. Roads can be blocked, and transport services may be affected. When this happens, we will try to keep your trip as close as possible to the original plan, even if this means leaving earlier than scheduled.
In some cases, tours may be changed or canceled. Any change will be coordinated by our operations team. Safety comes first, and decisions will be made to protect travelers and staff.
Lost objects
Please check your belongings whenever leaving transport, restaurants, ATV base, viewpoints, or rest areas. You are responsible for your personal items during the tour.
Keep passport, money, cards, medication, electronics, and cameras with you at all times.
Health and physical condition
The Rainbow Mountain ATV Tour reaches over 5,000 m / 16,404 ft. Even though the ATV reduces the walking effort, this is still a high-altitude activity with cold weather, thin air, sun exposure, and a final uphill walk.
Travelers should be in good physical condition. Older travelers, people with heart conditions, respiratory issues, recent injuries, pregnancy, or other medical concerns should speak with their doctor before booking.
Travelers must also be able to follow ATV safety instructions. Those who cannot drive safely may be asked to stop the activity for safety reasons.

This ATV tour passes through areas linked to Cusipata, Japura, Vinicunca, and the Vilcanota mountain range. These highland areas are connected to local Quechua communities, farming families, herders, and people who work with tourism services in the region.
Our commitment is to handle the tour with respect for these local communities and the fragile high-altitude ecosystem. The route crosses rural roads, grazing areas, and mountain spaces where llamas, alpacas, and local families are part of daily life.
For this activity, equipment and safety are central. The tour includes ATVs checked for mountain routes, helmets, gloves, a safety briefing, practice time, guide supervision, oxygen, and a first aid kit. The goal is not speed; the goal is controlled riding, clear instructions, and a safe route.
Food also matters on this tour. The day begins early, the altitude is high, and the activity requires energy. Breakfast and buffet lunch in Cusipata help travelers stay stronger throughout the day. Vegetarian, vegan, and special dietary requests should be reported in advance.
